Demystifying Osseointegration – How Dental Implants Work

November 2, 2017Dr. RegerDental Implants

Dental implants can sound terrifying and invasive. It can be nerve-racking to think about undergoing the procedure without fully understanding the process and how it works. At Reger Family Dental, we want to take the mystery out of dental implants for our San Antonio patients, and make sure that the process of fixing your smile is as stress-free and easy as possible.

How Do Dental Implants Work?

There are three key components to a dental implant. Understanding how each part works helps us achieve a patient’s perfect smile is key to helping keep the process stress free and ensure that they walk out of the office loving their smile.

  • The Fixture is a small titanium root piece that is inserted directly into the jawbone during a simple office procedure. As it heals a process called osseointegration begins.
  • The abutment is an important piece because this is where the new tooth will be attached. It allows the tooth to cover the titanium piece in the jawbone.
  • The crown or artificial tooth is often the most important part of the implant to the patient as it is carefully shaped to look, feel, and function just like a real tooth. These are usually made out of porcelain because of its strength and natural looking appearance. Once healed, the prosthetic tooth will act just like a normal tooth.

What is Osseointegration?

Osseointegration is when the bone starts to fuse into and around the piece of titanium allowing it to become a firm and durable fixture for the implant. It might sound very mysterious but really it’s just part of your natural healing process.

If you are still nervous about the procedure or unsure about what to expect during dental implant treatment ask your San Antonio dentist for more information. At Incredible Smiles of Texas, our team is committed to making this a positive experience. Being stress-free and in a positive mindset is important to ensuring you heal and love your new smile.
